Minimalism can help you grow mentally stronger. When you clear the clutter, you make room for things that really matter in life. But it's not just physical clutter. Financial clutter, calendar clutter, and relationship clutter can also stand between you and your best life.
Knowing what to get rid of and how to simply your life can feel like an uphill battle.
Joshua Fields Millburn explains how to make room for what truly matters in life. He's a writer, speaker, and filmmaker known for his work on minimalism. He is one of the founders of The Minimalists, a website and podcast dedicated to helping people live more meaningful lives with less stuff. He's a New York Times Best-Selling author of several books, including Minimalism: Live a Meaningful Life and Everything That Remains. He has also produced two documentaries, Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things and Less Is Now, both of which are available on Netflix.
He shares his personal journey with minimalism, from living the American dream with a big house and lots of possessions to realizing that those things didn't bring him happiness or fulfillment.
Some of the things he talks about are how to quickly decide whether to keep something, the impact clearing clutter can have on your mental health, and practical strategies for working through the emotional attachment to sentimental items.

One of the biggest challenges of simplifying is accepting we need to give up our fantasy self, fantasy home, fantasy life. We keep all kinds of things from clothes to hobbies to household items, in the hopes they will someday fit, be used, or have purpose. We have good intentions but the reality is we need to live for the here and now.

Yes! Along with realizing your kids and grandkids don't want your stuff so don't leave that huge burden on them while they are grieving your passing.

@@intherockies big call for deathcleaning I see ;-) Am trying to decide 3 friends, one locked up in a giant cluttered house which could be sold ( what is her plan) and allow for a good house and lots of travelling. The other one whose artistlover passed away leaving her with all the legacy, tools, scalemodels, original, drawings, moulds, huge sculptures , exhibition papers. Once she got rid of 9 tenth of the stuff to a museum, covid hit and the museum cancelled the collection. She knows she also has to declutter her own things.
Another sweet one is a paperfreak. The entire basement leading to the garden she loves working in and the 2 car garage is cramped with newspapers and old games of her 5 senior kids. With very weak hips and 2 sticks, mastering the very narrow path and steep steps is a treacherous challenge. The garage you can't go in or out really. Neither the carport. The car is parked on the street. Another one holds on to far too much since severe illness, the just in case bigger and smaller clothes . All of these people are very intelligent, welltravelled so they know they have to but don't know how to part with things without mourning. Their bereavement takes place BEFORE the actual parting takes place.

Hearing that I already have what I need but there is too much of it, I decided to cut off the hood that didn't fit my favorite bomber jacket, I had been thinking about it for over a year, it took me less than a minute now, I have my favorite thing back even better!
    Thank you for being here!

Imagine your whole house burns down in a terrible fire but your people and you survive miraculously although all your stuff is now gone. You will be so glad you all survived and won't give a second thought to your burnt belongings... Try thinking about that when getting rid of clutter: it makes it easier.

If historical people were told future people would have hundreds of thousands of items they would be excited because they would assume all the items are useful.

I’m on my way to “minimalizing” my home. I do hang on to certain things for just-in-case though. Because I don’t have the financial stability to purchase it in the future when it’s needed. But nothing like an orange sweatshirt. 😣

You live on a boat? Sweet! I used to live in a fifth-wheel camping trailer. It curbed my hoarding habits. Moved into a furnished cabin, so I still didn't need much - just my clothing & essentials. Then moved in with friends & rented a room. I purchased an air-bed & bookshelf. Then moved into my partner's house. 5 yrs later, both of our hoarding tendencies have us "stuffocated"! I'm traveling atm, but I can't wait to get home and start the 30 day challenge! I'm already decluttering my suitcases. Much respect & thanks for the inspiration 🙏 I have also challenged a friend. Her question: Does getting rid of/burning daily garbage count?
Love & hugs from Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦
P.S. I still have the airbed.

I was just curious if Joshua’s podcast affected you and how you feel with an extra house you have, I think that’s what you mentioned. Does that extra house give you more stress knowing it’s there and not being used by you. Just curious!

I just watched a video that debunked the average household having 300;000 items. That was a made up number and everyone ran with it.
